Artist Statement

Joy, Violence, Law, and Mischief is a series balancing the cruelties of society with humor. This collection of comics, prints, and skate decks feature four characters who each represent one of the four themes: Joy, Violence, Law, and Mischief.

Joy is represented via a charismatic skeleton. The skeleton is devoid of identity yet still embodies the basic human desire for joy. They engage in the pleasures of life with a free spirit. In every comic they break their clavicle but that does not stop them from going on delightful adventures.

Violence is represented by the frog. Honestly, there is no reason for choosing a frog. Despite being a loveable creature, violence is a common and natural part of life.

Law is embodied by the pig, who is frequently the antagonist or butt of the joke. Normally, I love a nuanced villain but my disdain for policing results in a flat character.

Mischief is the curious and troubled porcupine tomato plant. Inspired by the spiky and beautiful Solanum Pyracanthos, this character comes to life and gets into all sorts of trouble. The mischevious character is most definitely best friends with Joy and has a queer love affair with violence. Mischief is the misunderstood hero; they’re chaotic but loving.

The skeleton representing joy and the mischievous plant are the stars of the show, each with their own fully realized comic. Joy is an essential priority to thrive in a world that too often feels designed to weaken people. Mischief –maybe something to partake in with moderation– challenges the status quo. The porcupine tomato plant is a rule breaker; maybe they represent my desire to be more radical, though I know better than to murder, even those who build and sustain systems of greed and harm. Or do I? Mua ha ha

JK, I’m too busy having fun, skating around, being gay, only doing a little crime, and bringing love into everything I do. Question everything and do all you can, but don't be too serious :)
