An Image Reflected

My senior show An Image Reflected is a room installation about my experience with body image issues that stem from being a gymnast. This project has been away for me to reflect on my experiences and how, in my role as a gymnastics coach, I can help other gymnasts have a better relationship to their bodies.

The  installation of the  wall of mirrors represents the way I stood in my room for hours and picked apart pieces of my image that I wanted to change. I never saw the whole picture, only the broken pieces of the whole image.

Through making this artwork, I learned a lot about my creative practice. I’m learning that perfection doesn’t exist, but I’m proud of how I got to this point. The biggest takeaway I have from this process is to be open to the unexpected. The way I imagined this project at its end is vastly different from how it actually turned out, and I couldn’t be more proud. There is pain from the sport, but I love knowing that I am the driven person that I am today in large part because of the sport.
